How to Play Baccarat Guide

Baccarat is played with eight standard deck of 52 cards. It is an accepted as a game of skill and chance between you and the Banker. There are three types of bets in Baccarat and the game odds are high.

The Object Of Baccarat | The Winning Hand | Hand Values | Additional Hands | To Play A Game

The Object of Baccarat

The player has to earn a value as close to nine as possible by drawing 2 to 3 cards. The objective of the game is to correctly guess which three events will occur in the next round - either you win, the Banker wins or a Tie occurs. Simply put, Baccarat is a game of prediction. The player has to predict whose hand; the Banker's or the players, will be closer to the value of nine. You can also bet on the possibility of a tie. If your hand totals 9 or 8 you win automatically and your hand always draws first if you require additional cards.

The Winning Hand

  • The first two cards total a hand of 9.
  • The second highest hand is 8.
  • These hands are seen as “natural” hands.
  • A natural 9 will always beat a natural 8. If you or the Bank either has a natural 9 or 8, the other players are not allowed to draw a third card.

Baccarat Hand Values

The winning hand is the one with a value closest to nine. The value of a hand is calculated by adding up the total of the cards. The card values are:

If the total of a hand exceeds nine, the value of the hand is the "unit" portion of the total. For more information, see the examples below.

Examples:

  • A hand consists of an Eight of Clubs and a Seven of Diamonds. The point values are 8 and 7, so the total of the hand is 8 + 7 = 15. As the "tens" portion of the total is ignored, the value of the hand is five.
  • A hand consists of a Nine of Spades, a Two of Hearts and a Nine of Diamonds. The point values are 9, 2 and 9, so the total of the hand is 9 + 2 + 9 = 20. As the "tens" portion of the total is ignored, the value of the hand is zero.

Additional Cards

If no one has a “natural” 8 or 9, everyone receives a third card. The Banker’s next move (drawing or standing) will depend on the player’s hand total which gives you a slight advantage.
